Congress on new looks to Ecuadorian heritage

The 6 of October at the General Auditorium of the University of Azuay opened the congress Modernity: new looks at the heritage of Ecuador, organized by the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Art together with the School of Architecture.

In the inauguration were present the different authorities of the University, teachers, students, and Pedro Palacios, mayor of Cuenca.

“This year is very special for us as we turn 35 years as a Faculty and 10 years as a School of Architecture, so we have prepared a series of events that generate this reflection and this staging of architecture, and the importance of starting talk about heritage, ”said Santiago Vanegas, School Coordinator.

The congress aimed at reflection and identification of the ways in which the modern heritage, both urban and architectural, of Ecuador can be valued. I count on the presence of more than 30 national and international exhibitors who sought to generate methodologies and strategies to value this heritage.

The meeting was attended by students from the University of Azuay and also students from four different provinces of Ecuador such as Cañar, Guayas, Cotopaxi and Manabí.

The event culminated with a tour of the Historic Center of the city with a visit to two architectural works of modernity such as the Municipal Building and the House of Culture. After the tour, a closing ceremony was held at the Casa de las Posadas where the National Institute of Cultural Heritage currently operates.

“We had three very intense days of work, but - as well as intense - they have been highly rewarding and productive. We have had important debates and academic discussions, not only in terms of the papers presented but also directed towards the future of modern architecture in our country ”commented Paula Rodas, official of the INPC

Rhodes added that the meeting left more questions than answers "and that is good, because it makes us realize that there is still a lot of work to do and a long way to go, so from today we commit ourselves to work hard in a second edition."

Santiago Vanegas said that "the objective with these events is to generate in the students a crush on the city, to commit to the architecture and the profession and the knowledge that everything they do is useful for the service of the city."

"Finally, we are interested in students finding and generating lines of research and beginning to think of lines of interest for their future thesis topics," concluded the Architecture Coordinator.
