The UDA commemorates the coronation of Remigio Crespo Toral

A century ago, Ecuador crowned Remigio Crespo Toral with golden laurels as a tribute to the poet, diplomat, legislator, teacher and exemplary citizen of the Republic of Ecuador.

That November 4 1917 the poet's forehead wore the laurel wreath made by the goldsmith Ariolfo Vázquez with 34 gold leaf, symbolizing the country's institutions attached to the tribute.

The coronation of Remigio Crespo Toral was one of the most important historical events in Cuenca, in which the city had the opportunity to consecrate one of its most illustrious sons.

For this reason, the November 7 at the Remigio Crespo Toral house museum, the University of Azuay, the Remigio Crespo Toral Museum and the Alcaldía de Cuenca commemorated the 100 years of the coronation and recalled the most important facets of the poet.

The event was attended by Francisco Salgado Arteaga, Rector of the UDA; Juan Cordero Íñiguez, chronicler of the city of Cuenca and former director of the UDA; and René Cardoso, director of the Remigio Crespo Toral museum.

After a century of this solemn act, the crown can be seen publicly in the Museo Remigio Crespo Toral.

"Ecuador felt obliged by devotion, by affection, to pay tribute to Cuenca and to pay homage to Remigio Crespo Toral," said Juan Cordero Íñiguez and concluded that "the basins should be worthy creditors of this crown."
