Comparison Osi - TCP/IP

SIMILARITY BETWEEN THE OSI MODEL AND THE TCPIP MODEL

- Both are divided into layers or levels.

- The technology is assumed to be packet switching (not circuit switching).

- Networking professionals should know both: OSI as a model; TCP/IP as real architecture.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE OSI MODEL AND THE TCPIP MODEL

- OSI clearly distinguishes services, interfaces and protocols. TCP/IP does not do so, not making this separation clear.

- OSI was defined before the protocols were implemented, so some necessary functionality fails or does not exist. On the other hand, TCP/IP was created after the protocols, so it fits perfectly with them.

- TCP/IP seems to be simpler because it has fewer layers.
