The University of Azuay (UDA), celebrated, yesterday, the fiftieth anniversary of its creation. It did so with a ceremony in which its promoters, managers, former rectors, teaching and administrative staff were remembered that they have contributed to the alma mater in this half century. Dressed in blue academic robes, the University Board of Directors entered the auditorium to preside over the ceremony.

 

The university has worked with academic rigor, with faith in the person and the community, with perseverance in its commitments. It has been a community of thought where everyone learns, students and teachers, it was highlighted as values ​​of the house of studies.

 

The rector, Francisco Salgado, in his order speech, recalled that the UDA was born, in 1968, from the germ of being an Institute of Philosophy attached to the Catholic University of Guayaquil; then, extension of the Catholic University of Ecuador (PUCE), to, finally, be an independent university since August of 1990.

 

In principle, the current UDA did not have its own building: the seminary of Monay, the school of the Marianitas sisters, the one of the "Catalinas" and the one of the Borja, in Pumapungo they lodge it before having its seat. He also thanked and congratulated the Asunción Educational Unit that has grown together with the UDA.

 

He recalled characters such as Francisco Olmedo, Juan Cordero, Mario Jaramillo, Carlos Cordero, as exrectors and other academics who promoted the foundation of alma mater. It has been “a community of struggle, as when, in defense of university autonomy, they supported Andina Simón Bolívar University in the impasse with the government for the appointment of its rector.

He mentioned alumni such as Olympic champion Jefferson Pérez, businessman Patricio Ortiz; the prefect Paúl Carrasco and the viceprefect María Cecilia Alvarado.

At another time of the session, National Assemblywoman Cristina Reyes, delegated by the Legislature, imposed on the UDA pavilion the Medal of Cultural Merit Vicente Rocafuerte and gave the rector a legislative agreement. Other agreements came from the Legislation, Governance, Prefecture, Municipality.

 

Two books were presented at the event: "History and Thought", Redemption of the work of the historian Juan Cordero published by the 25 years of the UDA and "50 stories" of the teacher Matías Zibell, with testimonies of life of some of those who make the UDA, like that of a teacher who was previously a janitor.

 

A polyphonic choir of the university, made up of 9 women and 6 men, performed musical creations such as the Latin-language hymn "Gaudeamus Igitur", which praises the academy.

 

 

Memories of Monsignor Luna

 

Special place was dedicated to the memory of Monsignor Alberto Luna Tobar, former archbishop of Cuenca and his time as chancellor of the UDA. An audio was projected with the voice of the late archbishop, in which he told, moved, about the value of sharing.

In the end, a message from President Lenin Moreno was shown, in which he highlighted the work of the university, seat of reason and heart and urged to continue, faithful to their values, for a more just society.
