Family problems and academic performance

Family problems and academic performance

The academic performance shows what the student assimilated throughout their pedagogical process; as well as her ability to respond to educational stimuli (Gardey, 2021). Academic performance is fundamental in all teaching and learning processes, since it allows identifying whether the student meets the learning standards.

Low academic performance is a difficulty experienced by all students and teachers at any educational level. Its effect on the press and society is evident from two elements: when poor academic performance disturbs the professional self-realization of students; and, similarly, when the levels of skills and knowledge that they can achieve are limited to the demands of their professional practice.

Low academic performance can be due to various causes, such as: family disintegration, parenting styles, working parents, parental disinterest, addictions, favorite children, unwanted children, etc. These causes can be linked to pedagogical and personal variables in each student.

Family problems

One of the main concerns of school teachers, which is becoming more and more frequent, is the low academic performance that is generated in some students and that negatively intervenes in the normal development of the teaching process. In a study it is concluded that the parents who contribute in the activities developed in the school; They do it formally and based on the topics covered in class.

However, there is a group of parents who are not willing to carry out and meet the needs of the students and this causes low school performance. "Each person is responsible for providing family support; however, the help that parents provide to their children with high and low academic performance varies according to the interest that each parent has for their children," the study notes.

The psychologist Cristina Gallegos (2021), affirms that adequate psychological therapies are going to improve academic performance; however, other well-being factors are necessary, that is, working together with the family nucleus. Unfortunately, institutions do not give the necessary importance to the family environment, despite the fact that the two are closely linked in qualifications and performance.

For her part, the Educational Psychologist, Tatiana Pesántez, states that abuse causes serious conditions in the academic performance of children and young people, since it is a factor that prevents the student from reaching high levels of concentration, because abuse generates alterations in the nervous system.

However, he is concerned that when conducting interviews to detect the reason for the students' attitude, in terms of their poor performance, the representatives usually hide all types of violence at home and, therefore, it is important to carry out a timely diagnosis and due interviews, to get to the origin of the students' situation in terms of their performance and behavior.
