New anthology of Ecuadorian poetry edited by the UDA

Authors from 1890 to 1974. From modernism to the avant-garde, a selection of poems and poets from six generations.

Poems of 87 poets of six generations, born between 1890 and 1974, appear in the "Essential Anthology of Ecuadorian Literature", a book presented yesterday, at the University of Azuay.

The work has 560 pages and an introductory study on national poetry, from the late nineteenth century to the present.

Sara Vanegas Coveña is the author of this anthology, which includes poets from modernism to avant-garde and post avant-garde. The first current, from Humberto Fierro to Medardo Ángel Silva; and, the second, from Hugo Mayo to Alfonso Espinosa.

The anthologist, with this work, wanted to make an overview of the literature, with a chronological and generational criteria, and the result has been a selection work where the most representative authors are, said Eugenia Washima, in the presentation of the book .

Among other poets whose works the anthology reproduces are: Alfonso Moreno Mora, Remigio Romero y Cordero, Mary Corylé, Jacinto Cordero Espinosa, Efraín Jara Idrovo, Rubén Astudillo and Astudillo, Jorge Dávila Vázquez, Cristóbal Zapata, Catalina Sojos.

Sara Vanegas explained that she has sought an inclusive and complete selection with well-known authors and other nobles that has not been favored by critics and even relegated in works similar to this.

The poets were located in their time and space, in the geopolitical moment they lived, so that there is a better understanding of the readers.

The texts are expected to be sweet and useful to read, he said, after recalling a phrase by Bertold Bretch that all times have been bad for the lyric - also the current one - but that the poets always found resources to survive and Express yourself with the word.

In every selection there are personal criteria, however, it has been tried that aesthetics prevail in this, he said.

From each author there is a selection of texts and, in the final part of the Anthology, a detailed bibliography of each poet, with a poetic bibliography and the year of publication.

About 30 sources, among books and other anthologies, Vanegas used to produce his own.

Jacinto Guillén, Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Azuay, said that for alma mater it is pleasant to present successful research results as in this case, with this “touching work of Ecuadorian poetry”.

Among the contemporary authors considered in the anthology are Carlos Vallejo, Franklin Ordonez, Alfonso Espinosa, Xavier Oquendo, Paúl Puma, Aleyda Quevedo, Marialuz Albuja, Ana Cecilia Blum (AVB) - (I)
