More than 5.000 lanterns will be lit tonight in Santo Domingo

A new edition of the Festival of Lights will take place on the afternoon of this Tuesday, December 7, 2021 in the Santo Domingo square, in the center of Cuenca.

This is the traditional celebration of the anniversary of the coronation of the Virgen Morenica del Rosario in which thousands of lanterns adorn the square and the surrounding streets.

This 2021 marks 88 years. The organization of this celebration is in charge of the Dominican Community of the Santísimo Rosario Convent, the University of Azuay and the Municipal Tourism Foundation for Cuenca.

This year there will be more than 5.000 lanterns, which will shape the crown and other allegories of the Virgin. Attendees can go to light the lanterns or bring their own to do so, informed the Foundation.

"For one afternoon and night, the tourist services of the historic center of the city will have great movement, so the tourism sector has prepared itself with promotions and a varied offer to receive visitors with quality and the hospitality that characterizes Cuencans" , assures the municipal entity in a statement.

The event will start at 18:30 p.m. and a musical number is planned with the presentation of the artist Vanessa Freire, who will give a serenade in honor of the Virgin. (I)
