The University of Azuay won the Mascaradas de Cuenca contest

Universidad del Azuay won first place in the Mascaradas 2019 contest in Cuenca, southern Ecuador. The morning of this Monday 7 of January the decision of the jury was spread. The Amistad Club and the Union of Journalists of Azuay are the organizers of the event. It is a colorful parade that brings together the humor, mockery and jocularity, and that has been running for 38 consecutive years the Amistad Club and the Union of Journalists of Azuay, on the Day of Kings. Hundreds of people were located along the avenue Huayna Cápac to observe the humor and creativity of the participants. Many spectators also come out in disguise, including children, youth and adults. Each institution or family recreates characters or conjunctural events (political, social, sports, family ...) that have made history in Cuenca, Ecuador or the world. Expand The procession of comparsas for the Day of the Innocents went along Huayna Cápac Avenue, in Cuenca.

Some have flashy allegorical cars with participations ranging from 50 to 500 people. Thus, for example, the winning choreography was titled 'Ecuador Postacopalíptico' and more than 300 students and teachers participated and won an economic prize of USD 4 000. The second place with USD 3 000 went to the Jardín Azuayo Savings and Credit Cooperative with the theme 'Playing and Cooperating acolitamos' and the third one of USD 2 000 for the University of Cuenca with "Las insatiable machines". This 2019 had greater participation with 28 registered groups, when the previous year they were 20. The troupes that started 15: 00 concluded around midnight. In the categories of comparsas and infant the winners were the San Francisco neighborhood and the Luis Cordero educational center, respectively. The prizes were USD 1 500 and 500, in the same order.
