Bioethics reflects on contemporary reality

From today in the UDA will be International Congress with national and foreign speakers.

Bioethics is a discipline that, among other objectives, discusses lines of conduct in the face of human activities related to health and life. The University of Azuay (UDA) has organized an International Congress in which, for three days, starting today, will be discussed with national and international speakers on the relationship of Bioethics and its implications in contemporary culture.

The days start from the 08: 00 with the inscriptions for the Congress; while from the 08: 30 will be the opening and 08: 45 the first conference that will focus on "Bioethics and Society", by Susana María Vidal, from Argentina, doctor and specialist of the "Ethics for Science" program, the United Nations Educational and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

It is necessary in contemporary society to discuss, from the moral point of view, but without a religious vision, whether or not certain actions are taken in the fields of medicine, economics, psychology, the environment. Debates on gender, abortion, hirings of rent, palliative care, mining in natural areas, are fields of work of Bioethics, explains Juan Morales, professor of the UDA, of the organizing team of the event.

After the first conference, from the 10: 30 will be installed the round table: "Bioethics, sociology and communication", with teachers Luis Tobar, Caroline Avila and Yolanda Dávila. In the afternoon, "Bioethics and Environment" will be discussed with the exhibitor Roque Junges, from Brazil, Doctor in Moral Theology, professor at the Vale do Rio dos Sinos University.

Then there will be two round tables: "Values of biodiversity", with professors Gustavo Chacón, Andrés Martínez and Adriana Mora; and, "Environmental Services", with Paul Little and Roque Sevilla.

Debate

Bioethics in its relations with Law and Medicine will be the topics of debate for tomorrow, while, on Friday, the academic agreements and the final conclusions will be defined.

However, it is not a question of creating a single morality but of generating reflection on the acts. In the discussion if a mine is exploited or not there are different criteria between the miner and the conservationist, in the middle arises the connection with sustainability and life.

In the field of Law, with Bioethics it is not sought to convert moral criteria into laws, they can influence but it is not the end, more “thinking about the right thing” will be useful to reach legal certainty and know what legal text to stick to, says Pablo León, a student of Jurisprudence of the UDA and part of the support to the organization.

Behavior

Likewise, Bioethics is related to areas such as Psychology, because it deals with people and will be valuable to understand their behavior, the justification in making decisions.

Then you can talk about the arguments to justify the use, restricted or liberal, including repression of drugs, weapons, and so on. The goal of the congress is to raise the importance of reflection, but not to indoctrinate, says Priscila Cabrera, a psychologist, also part of those responsible for organizing this meeting, which encourages the UDA as one of the events for the celebration of its 50 anniversary.
