On December 2, the Teatro Company of the University of Azuay premiered the play entitled "Faustito Although He Prefiere to be Called Faust", written and directed by Geordie Almeida and Jaime Garrido.

The event began with a welcome from the Rector, Francisco Salgado, who commented that this work seeks to remember that if something saves us as humanity, it is precisely art.

"At the University we have various artistic manifestations that are always giving life to the community, such as the university tuna, the dance company and now this magnificent presentation," he added.

For the Rector, this kind of event "gives us hope for life, for shared work, for the future."

The Dean of the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Art, Genoveva Malo, commented that "it is an immense joy to celebrate life, to celebrate art with music, with color, with manifestations of our culture."

At the same time, he thanked the people gathered at the event, either in person or virtually, commenting that “although virtual media allow us to unite and be connected, the essence of the human being is this, this meeting in its physical manifestation, in gestures, smiles and presence ”.

The work goes to the archetype of Goethe's Faust, that man who, by achieving youth and knowledge, is able to sell his soul to the devil. On this occasion, Almeida and Garrido recreated an Ecuadorian Faustito who does not know that his encounter with the boss of hell is going to be different from what he expected.

The plot shows a character who has not suffered for years, who travels all over Ecuador and each place he arrives receives the recognitions and tributes he believes he deserves. Faustito's journey ends in Cuenca, a cultured city where he seeks to be able to relax and lead a quiet life worthy of his intelligence and reputation.

In addition to the adaptation to the Ecuadorian culture, the argument has another twist to highlight: the boss of hell on this occasion was played by a woman and was given the name of Lucía Fernanda.

The protagonists were Francisco Aguirre, Samanta Villota and Hilda Valdez. Regarding the musical direction, it was directed by Carlos Loja with the band of musicians made up of Milena Montayo, Ana Crespo, David Matute, Carlos Loja and Jaime Garrido.

In turn, the design and elaboration of masks was in charge of Ana Crespo, the design of scenic objects was by Mauricio Pesantez, sound by Daniel Montalván, graphic design by John Alarcón and communication by Emilia Acurio. The work was under the general supervision of Jaime Garrido.

The play concluded with a typical dance and music of the country. Similarly, Genoveva Malo ended the event dedicating the premiere of the work to the Faculty of Administration Sciences for its anniversary.
