UDA participates in research to reactivate national tourism

World tourism has been affected since the first months of the pandemic and Ecuador was no exception.

In May 2020, the National Federation of Provincial Chambers of Tourism of Ecuador collected data on hotels in Guayaquil. The results showed that in some lodgings they laid off 80% of their employees due to the reduction in income.

Today there are several places that start to start local tourism again, as is the case of Manta, Manabí, which reopened the doors of the city's museums.

This is why the Ministry of Tourism, together with 13 universities in the country, has conducted an investigation that allows statistical analysis of the country's tourism potential after the pandemic.

The Study of the Behavior of National Tourism in the Covid-19 Scenario is managed by the different universities in each province, in the case of Azuay, the UDA with its School of Tourism.

Teachers Natalia Rincón and Catalina González worked on data collection with applied surveys.

The results show that 54% of Ecuadorians plan to travel from the year 2021; on the other hand, 31% want to travel in the remainder of 2020 and only 15% do not plan to travel for a long time.

The coastal region would be the preferred tourist destination with 44%, compared to 26% in the sierra region, likewise 9% would choose the Amazon and 5% the insular region.

The results also show that only 4 out of 10 find biosecurity and safety as their motivation when choosing a destination.
