UDA organizes discussion on disability

On Monday, December 6, the discussion "Disability: between discourse and reality" took place, organized by the University of Azuay and its Educational Psychology career.

Various social groups such as the Minga for Disability, the El Trébol Foundation, the National Federation of Mothers and Parents of People with Intellectual Disabilities (FEPAPDEM) and the Association of Parents, Representatives and Self-advocates with Disabilities (APRACOD) also participated in the organization of the event. ).

The academic appointment was held within the framework of the celebration of December 3, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

We spoke with Mónica Corral, Coordinator of the School of Educational Psychology, about the problem analyzed in the event and the historical relationship of the School with these issues.

The theme was defined with the intention of giving the audience a look at disability from a social and psychological point of view.

The people who attended were students from the Educational Psychology career -from first to ninth cycle-, a group of students from the Initial Education career and another from Basic Education, teachers, parents and the general public.

Who were invited to the event?

Representatives of various groups in the city were invited.

Among them were María de Lourdes Huiracocha, President of the Centro Huiracocha Tutivén-Neurodesarrollo; Dalila Edith Patiño, Provincial Coordinator of FEPAPDEM, and Marcos Loyola, blind businessman who was accompanied by his guide dog Thor.

Also Lucía Catalina Ávila, Coordinator of social projects of El Trébol; Diego Córdova, Coordinator of the Citizen Observatory on Disabilities of Azuay, María Elisa Orellana, Inclusive Facilitator at the Santa María de la Esperanza Foundation and at the “El Nido” Shelter Center for People with Disabilities, and Lina Magdalena Vintimilla, Coordinator of the Council of Participación y Control Social, who has written several books of children's stories, including “El Arca de Josué”.

What is the relevance of disability for the School of Educational Psychology?

The Educational Psychology career, within its professional profile, aims to provide care to children and adolescents with special educational needs, associated or not with disability.

In addition, within their professional training, they include professorships and pre-professional practices related to the subject; reason for which the discussion served the purpose of creating a space for dialogue with actors from society involved in this issue.

After the event, the members of the Academic Board were invited to be part of the activities that they carry out.
