Three days dedicated to a daily and diverse exercise of ethics

On Wednesday, November 25, the International Ethics Congress was inaugurated, which was organized by the Ethics Program of the University of Azuay and supported by the institutions that are part of the University and Citizen Network of Ethics and Bioethics (RUCEB).

On the first day, the axes of ethics and science, and the relationship between ethics and justice, were analyzed.

"Ethics is the foundation of all human activity that positions the protection of life and its sustainability as the major objectives of humanity," said Francisco Salgado, Rector of the University of Azuay, when opening the event.

Then, Juan Morales, Director of the Ethics Program at the University of Azuay, stressed that this event is the product of two years of work and that, although it is a goal achieved, "it will not be the end of the road."

Pedro Palacios, Mayor of the city of Cuenca, also welcomed those who attended the congress, highlighting the importance of a society bearing values and principles through the participation of all:

"Getting involved is the most important and the most difficult part, because leaving our comfort zone entails leaving behind a desk, a march, a sit-in and demanding being part of the change that is really required."

Then it was the turn of the national and international exhibitors who presented the results of the research and teaching work in various areas, as also happened on Thursday and Friday.

On the second day of the congress, on November 26, two main topics were discussed: ethics and health, and ethics, design and architecture.

When inaugurating the first axis, Galo Duque, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Azuay, commented that “ethics is nothing other than veneration and respect for life, the first step in the evolution of ethics is a sense of solidarity with other human beings ”.

His peer from the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Art emphasized that society today demands a sustainable and ecological design:

"The environment is everyone's home", said Genoveva Malo and added that and through design it connects with these axes "he added that it is essential to take care of nature through the life cycle of the product, its process, its use and the way it is recycled and reused.

On November 27, the third and last day of the congress was held, a day whose axes were ethics and administration, in the morning, and ethics and philosophy in the afternoon.

Oswaldo Merchán, Dean of the Faculty of Administration Sciences of the University of Azuay, began the morning session with an analysis of how, in recent history, there have been no lack of voices that demonize business activity, calling it perverse and exploitative.

However, according to Merchán, that perspective is changing and society positively receives business activity, the generation of work and wealth, without neglecting that all this is done taking into account the care of the environment and the dignity of the individuals that comprise it.

In the afternoon, Ramiro Lasso, Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Educational Sciences, mentioned that without education, ethics is vulnerable, especially in complicated contexts like the one we live today.

Therefore, for Laso, it is necessary to strengthen this discipline in these academic spaces.

To end the event, Ximena Moscoso, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Administration Sciences and member of the Ethics Group, presented the conference proceedings, with the contributions of all the exhibitors who participated in these three days of talks and debates.
