In the Sucre Theater, the seminar "We are missing 3, a before and after", organized by Rimaks Unidos, an organization made up of the student representatives of the Social Communication careers of the University of Azuay, Cuenca and the Salesian Polytechnic. (UPS).

The event, which took place at the 4 in May, began with the presentation of Luis Herrera, UPS professor, who carried out a geopolitical analysis of the area in conflict on the Ecuador-Colombia border.

"The history of irrigation already has some years on the border and we can say that up to decades. We are neglecting the thematic complexity that is facing a global society at risk, we are not reflecting on the war, on drug trafficking that are part of this composition of urban society, "said Herrera.

Then they talked about the rights that communicators have in the exercise of their profession, UDA professor Jorge Piedra; Ricardo Tello, professor at the State University; and Juan Pablo Vintimilla, editor of the newspaper El Tiempo.

Tello, a columnist for the newspaper El Universo, stressed the need to "move towards the issue of the responsibility that journalists have, because how we do our work is what will make the difference."

Piedra, journalist of Radio Tomebamba, recalled that a few days ago the UNESCO report on press freedom was published "where aspects of security and the magnitude of seriousness that communicators are living in the world are mentioned, and in said report it is revealed that only the 1 justice of each 10 arrives in cases of death of journalists ".

Vintimilla, meanwhile, spoke about another type of insecurity, the legal: "If we are rigorous and careful in the work we do, we can ensure our own security."

On the other hand, Matías Zibell, Coordinator of the School of Communication of the UDA, along with Jackeline Beltrán, a journalist from El Tiempo, addressed the human aspect of coverage in risk areas, and finally Tomás Ciuffardi, a journalist of the Vision 360 program. Ecuavisa, spoke about his experience in investigative journalism.

"Why do I like to cover risk areas? Zibell asked, correspondent of the BBC in Ecuador- For the chaos. Chaos can cost you your life, but it can also give you the best coverage of your story. "

Finally, Ciuffardi said that in his opinion what happened at the border does not mark a before or after. "Some things have changed but we still do not discuss security protocols for journalists and clear strategies for journalistic exercise in situations of risk."

The event was an initiative of the students of Communication of the city, who undertook the path of Rimaks Unidos to show that it is possible for universities to join and generate debates on relevant issues in society.

“Rimaks means communicators in Quichua, so what our name means, united communicators, and that is what we seek, we want it not only to be an event but we also seek to create more spaces for dialogue and debate among the youth of Cuenca, especially among journalism students. ”, Explained Karolina Mora, president of the UDA Communication ASO.
