Collaboration project on Sustainable Mobility with the Korean government delegation

On January 22, the University of Azuay received a visit from a delegation of experts from the Government of Korea, as part of the collaboration project on Sustainable Mobility for the city of Cuenca.

This meeting is part of the project “Strengthening Management and Monitoring of Urban Mobility through a Data Observatory in Cuenca, Ecuador”, whose objective is to establish a Data Observatory with a unified and standardized base on mobility in the city.

This initiative seeks to address the challenges arising from increasing motorized mobility, which affects vehicle traffic, air quality and noise levels, and to enhance Cuenca's capabilities in data analysis. (big data) to generate smart mobility solutions.

During this visit, joint work was carried out with the Institute of Regional and Social Studies of Ecuador (IERSE) and the Mobility Laboratory of the University of Azuay. At the meeting, our institution presented the progress in measuring air quality, noise indicators in the city and the mobility patterns of our university community.

This project has its roots in the Cuenca Sustainable Mobility Committee, consolidated in 2021, and made up of representatives of the DGM, the Public Mobility Company (EMOV EP), academics from the University of Azuay, representatives of citizens, rural areas and the transport union.

In 2023, the DGM submitted this proposal to a call for proposals from Korea Eximbank and CAF, and was selected through the Knowledge Exchange Program, which promotes innovative solutions in smart mobility. As part of this program, the Government of Korea will provide technical advice and its experience in the use of technological tools for monitoring and managing urban mobility, thus strengthening the city's capacity to make informed and efficient decisions regarding transportation.

This project represents a significant step towards improving urban transport management in Cuenca and implementing public policies based on concrete data for more sustainable and efficient mobility in our city.
