Protection of the Yanuncay River

On July 22, the Constitution Act was signed for the formation of the Yanuncay River Basin Conservation Committee, which was attended by the union of wills of eight institutions.

Among the institutions that make up the Committee are the University of Azuay; STAGE EP; Ministry of the Environment, Water and Ecological Transition; Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock; ElecAustro, and parish governments of San Joaquín, Baños and Chaucha.

This Committee is focused on respecting current regulations and adequately managing water as a natural resource, so that in this way the right to consumption, its use for irrigation and its ecological conservation is guaranteed to favor an optimal control of floods and exploitation in electrical energy production.

Francisco Salgado, Rector of the UDA, explained at the event the importance of the creation of this Committee, because thanks to it, the necessary decisions and precautions can be taken as soon as there is a shortage or excess of water in the Yanuncay River. He also stressed that it will contribute to the consolidation of educational and productive projects that the University has implemented in the area.

On the other hand, the manager of ElecAustro, Antonio Borrero, agreed with the need and relevance of the creation of the aforementioned committee, since having as a guide and the closest local reference to the Machángara River Management Committee, a notable progress and benefit has been evidenced for the different inhabitants of the parishes of said location, so this could contribute in the same way with the Yanuncay.

Among the objectives established by the Committee and to which it will direct its functions, are to promote the integral management of the water resource in the middle and upper basin of the Yanuncay River, to promote actions for an adequate use of the land, based on the specific potentialities and to coordinate the responsible use of water resources in the Yanuncay river basin.

Also, disseminate strategies of communal-institutional management of the natural resources of the Yanuncay river basin, channel agreements between the members of the Committee, as well as with community and local river actors for the implementation of strategies that make possible the conservation of the river. basin.

Finally, promote the formation of integration networks that enhance and strengthen interactions between organizations and actors that have an interest in the conservation of the Yanuncay River basin and contribute to the integrated management of its ecosystems and the different conservation strategies that are and are established in the river basin, guaranteeing its state of conservation.
