Presentation of the book "Lights, Faith and History". In a space full of symbolism

On December 7, in the church of Santo Domingo, the presentation of the book “Lights, Faith and History: Morenica del Rosario 90 years” written by the authors Genoveva Malo Toral, Soledad Moscoso Cordero and Carolina Vivar Cordero was held. 

“Lights, Faith and History” celebrates the ninetieth anniversary of the canonical coronation of the Virgin Morenica del Rosario in Cuenca. This story stands as a chronicle that seeks to capture the essence of this religious phenomenon, exploring the historical moments that have marked its trajectory and the symbolism in the faith and culture of the city. 

From the arrival of the Dominican order to Latin America, Ecuador and Cuenca, the construction of the convent, the plaza, the church, the coronation of the Virgin until reaching recent history with the festival of lights; as well as the connection of the Dominican community to the University of Azuay and the work of the students who have designed with lanterns and by the light of colored candles, beautiful allegories and figures loaded with enormous symbolism and luminosity. 

The welcome speech was given by Genoveva Malo Toral, academic vice-rector of the University of Azuay, who pointed out that through a historical journey of stories, testimonies and the heartbeat of a city, this book aims to illuminate the paths that the community has traveled. Dominican and its Morenica del Rosario, celebrating its physical and symbolic presence.

The presentation of the book was led by Verónica Heras, deputy dean of the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Art of the University, where she mentioned that in the book presented, you will find the result of an exhaustive historical review that highlights the keys to understanding history of the Dominicans until reaching the proclamation of the Virgin of the Rosary as Queen of Cuenca; historical landmark that symbolizes the deep-rooted devotion that has marked our city. 

The official launch was carried out by Soledad Moscoso, architect and PhD candidate at the University of Valladolid in the Doctorate in Architecture program, representing the authors. 

The event concluded with the lighting of lanterns that were outside the Santo Domingo church, where without a doubt the history, memory and faith of a vibrant community that is reaffirmed today in the neighborhood, the academy and the devotion.
