Sustainable Development Goals and the Academy

Sustainable Development Goals and the Academy

On December 18, the conference on the role of the Academy in meeting the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) was held.

The event was organized by the School of Food Engineering and the Faculty of Science and Technology.

According to the Dean of the Faculty, Andrés López, the conference provided "the opportunity to learn how the University should be linked and contribute to the SDGs proposed by the UN."

The invited speaker was the engineer Wania Espinoza, Ecuador national coordinator of the International Network of SDG Promoters, who spoke about sustainable development and the role of the Academy in meeting its objectives.

According to Espinoza, we need to quickly integrate the activities that are carried out continuously to improve the situation on the planet.

Therefore, "we must stop underestimating the problems far from our territory since the survival of many societies and the systems that support our lives are at risk."

During the webinar, Espinoza explained the purpose of sustainable development: "Guarantee the needs of the present without compromising future generations and without giving up the pillars: environmental protection, social development and economic growth."

Also, he spoke about the six axes of sustainability: people, peace, prosperity, justice, partnerships and the planet.

The 2030 Agenda for sustainable development was carried out in 2015 and the engineer affirms that this, "it concerns us all because it has goals, objectives and indicators that are universal, transversal and extrapolated."

Finally, Espinoza stressed that due to the pandemic different social gaps have been accentuated; therefore, it indicates that it is important for academia to analyze the problems in its environment and make proposals based on the aforementioned objectives to comply with the 2030 Agenda.
