New masculinities and old stigmas

New masculinities and old stigmas

On March 8, in the framework of the commemoration of International Women's Day, a conference was held at the University of Azuay with the title "Knocking down male stigmatizations."

The event was held via Zoom and was organized by the Department of Equality and Gender of the UDA; the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Education Sciences; the School of Clinical Psychology, and the Federation of Students (UDAFE).

The conference was directed by Damián Villamarín, a 6th cycle student in Clinical Psychology, who explored topics such as: Is masculinity a product of society? Rules on which traditionalist masculinities are based, types of masculinities, the price of masculinity, ideologies of masculinity and new masculinities.

"Thank you for the space, in order to make more visible this disagreement and this criticism that men have, that we are also dissatisfied with this system of patriarchy," Villamarín said at the end.

On the occasion of the talk we interviewed the Director of the Department of Equality and Gender of the UDA, María del Carmen Calderón, who pointed out that "if women can cry and vent, men can also do it, by crying one is not less of a man" .

For the teacher, the new masculinities "try to educate men in a different way, in which we all win."
