Memoirs of a Surgeon: Book Presentation

Memoirs of a Surgeon: Book Presentation

On July 10, the University of Azuay, together with its publishing house, presented the book "Memoirs of a Surgeon" by Gonzalo Ortíz Crespo; an event in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.

The event was attended by authorities, teachers and administrative staff of our university community, family and friends of the author and the general public.

Dr. Emiliano J. Crespo (1885-1971), a key figure in the history of medicine in Cuenca by introducing asepsis, antisepsis and modern surgery, wrote an interesting account of his life entitled Memoirs of a Surgeon, published in three volumes. This publication reissues the first two volumes in a revised and illustrated edition by the author, a renowned writer and historian, with the collaboration of his brother, the architect and researcher Alfonso Ortiz Crespo.

The welcoming remarks were delivered by Francisco Salgado, rector of the University of Azuay, who emphasized the importance of reissuing this autobiography, as it is a valuable cultural and anthropological document. He noted that the University is thus joining in the preservation of the memory of a woman whose life marked a milestone in the medical history of Azuay.

The book was presented by Jacinto Landívar, who expressed the honor of releasing this publication. He emphasized that the author shares his deep love for the city of his birth and tells his story with relatability, taking readers on a fascinating journey through the world of medicine in Cuenca.

The book launch was led by the author, who thanked the authorities for publishing the work and noted that its objective is to recognize and highlight the work of those who have dedicated their lives to serving others.
