Linda Guamán: "DNA is part of life"

On October 14, the tenth session of the open chair of Humanistic Studies and Thought "Bolívar Echeverría" was held, with the subject genetically modified organisms.

According to Diego Jadán, Coordinator of the chair, in the ten sessions of this academic space the objective has been “to address a contemporary humanistic, social or philosophical debate” in which gender equality is guaranteed in relation to the speakers.

"The work done in the chair helps to highlight the work we do at the University of Azuay for the strengthening of the Humanities and Social Sciences," added Jadán.

On this occasion the guest was Linda Guamán, PhD in Microbiology, who presented, through different cases, the current and possible future applications of genetic modification in areas such as health and agriculture.

During the session, Guamán emphasized the lack of evidence that shows that genetically modified organisms are a health risk and indicated that “there is a tendency to think that genetic modifications in the laboratory are apocalyptic” when in reality they are already part of our day to day.

To conclude, Guamán stressed that the organisms in question represent an alternative to face different challenges of modern society and added that we must stop "being afraid of a chemical compound" because "DNA is part of life."
