The interview as a research tool

On April 29, the workshop “The interview from various angles” was held, with a presentation by Matías Zibell, Gabriela Eljuri and Silvana Tapia, teachers at the University of Azuay, to develop an approach from journalism, ethnography and the socio-legal .

The event was carried out through the Zoom platform and lasted around three hours. The first segment was in charge of Matías Zibell, who addressed the subject of the journalistic interview.

“In the journalistic interview there is usually a disparate power relationship, fluctuating according to the case; between interviewer and interviewee, ”he began.

Along the same lines, he expressed that the coincidence between the two actors in an interview is that both, for different reasons, seek public dissemination.

The ethnographic interview occupied the second part of the workshop. Gabriela Eljuri indicated that “the interview, as a qualitative research technique, does not intend to test hypotheses but rather to generate them; This type of research has an interpretive character based on analysis ”.

Likewise, Eljuri stated that ethnography “has a perspective based on cultural relativism and understands reality as a changing phenomenon; the field meeting is a meeting of knowledge since the center is not in what people do, but in the sense that people give to what they do ”.

The third segment consisted of a socio-legal approach by Silvana Tapia. "The conversation in the interview has a predefined purpose, this type of interview does not apply exclusively to the field of law, but to those who are interested in understanding the relationship with any type of regulation," he began.

“Socio-legal studies start from the idea that the law and the norms always protect particular rights; This approach aims to deepen the effect generated by the laws once they go from the formal aspect to reality, to go beyond traditional legal research, ”said Tapia.

Finally, a space for questions focused on any of the three topics covered in the workshop and the speakers was opened; the event organizers will award a training certificate to those who registered to attend the event.
