The pending subject in teacher training

The pending subject in teacher training

On April 7, the Department of Continuous Training of the University of Azuay - in conjunction with the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Education Sciences, and the School of Special Education - held the event "High skills, the pending subject in training teacher ”, by Professor Ximena Vélez.

The webinar was attended by teachers from primary, secondary, higher education and people related to the subject.

Ximena Vélez began by mentioning that “care for gifted students is a pending issue in many educational systems. Some studies have shown that these children are not being adequately cared for in school classrooms because of the educational needs that derive from their high ability do not receive the school responses that correspond to their outstanding potential ”.

The teacher added that “one of the limitations to meet this educational need has to do with the teaching staff, we teachers do not yet have the knowledge and resources necessary to serve this population because we are not using the strategies and methods that maximize their abilities and allow the boys who are in this situation to demonstrate them ”.

For Ximena, High Abilities, the pending subject is a title that sells, but to speak of a pending subject is to speak of something that is incomplete, omitted either intentionally or fortuitously.

During the event, they spoke about the support needs that both students and teachers have, as well as the school acceleration that usually generates great resistance from teachers who do not have knowledge on this subject.

To conclude, Ximena Vélez stressed that it is important to redesign the initial training screens, monitor compliance with the law, empower parents and practice an alliance between the teacher, directors, parents and children.

"No educational system is better than its teachers," he concluded.
