The Academy discusses diversity in all its forms

On July 30, five researchers analyzed aspects related to four different types of diversities and the role of the most vulnerable in society.

UDA professor Liliana Arciniegas spoke about functional diversity: people with disabilities, people with chronic and catastrophic diseases.

His colleague Cesibel Ochoa and the professor at the University of Almería Cayetano Aranda referred to sexual diversity

Ángel Japan, professor at the University of Cuenca, talked about ethnic and cultural diversity: different nationalities, ethnic groups and origins and cultures, indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples, and peasant communities.

Finally, Esperanza Durán, retired professor at the Universidad del Azuay, referred to age diversity.

The moderator of the event, Ximena Vélez, expressed that “in these times it is evident that the most accentuated and differentiated impact of the crisis has been for those who are in a vulnerable situation, for people who, due to their diversity, have difficulties in accessing their rights, difficulties that due to the COVID-19 crisis will become inequality gaps much more difficult to overcome ”.

For this reason, the speakers spoke about the challenges that equality in relationships implies, the ways of communicating and referring to diversities, the social representation of diversities, the presence and participation of diversities and measures to fight against inequality. and exclusion.

"The approach was broad, from different perspectives that meet and complement each other, the views were inclusive and the message that was sought to offer was to demand and empower diversity," concluded Vélez.
