Opening of the XLVIII National Biology Conference
On November 21, the University of Azuay, together with its Vice-Rectorate for Research and School of Biology, held the inauguration of the XLVIII National Biology Conference; an event in harmony with the Sustainable Development Goals.
The event was attended by authorities, teachers and students from our university community, members of different institutions participating in the event and the general public.
For the second time, the University of Azuay is hosting the National Biology Conference, being an academic reference point for sharing, promoting and celebrating the science generated in biology schools and related fields in Ecuadorian universities.
The opening ceremony began with a speech by Francisco Salgado, rector of the University of Azuay, who stressed the importance of remembering that the University has a fundamental commitment to society, based on two essential pillars: science and philosophy. He stressed that this commitment must be guided by knowledge and ethics, promoting a transition from an ethic centered on consumption to an ethic of care.
In turn, Raffaella Ansaloni, Vice-Rector for Research, addressed the audience, highlighting the trajectory of the School of Biology, founded in 1989 with the purpose of training biologists committed to the knowledge of biodiversity and environmental problems. Over these 35 years, the School has made important contributions to science, reaffirming that it must actively contribute to society and offer solutions to current crises. In this context, the biology conferences represent a valuable opportunity to promote and acquire the necessary knowledge to face these challenges.
Representing Alina Freire Fierro, President of the Ecuadorian Society of Biology, the first member of the Society took the floor to warmly welcome the attendees.
The opening ceremony ended with the first presentation of the conference, which will take place on November 21 and 22, 2024.
