On July 1, the Human Rights Network of the University of Azuay invited the Italian professor Luigi Ferrajoli to speak entitled "The characteristics of the universality, inalienability and unavailability of Human Rights."

The program began at 11:30 am, with a welcome from the University authorities. The first intervention was by the Rector Francisco Salgado, who thanked both the presence of the participants and that of Ferrajoli, and highlighted the honor that the institution feels in the presence of the exhibitor due to their knowledge.

This is how José Chalco, Dean of the Faculty of Legal Sciences, also expressed himself, affirming that Ferrajoli is an illustrious academic recognized for his critical and transformative thinking.

To which the exhibitor responded gratefully and began the talk with an explanation about fundamental and patrimonial rights. Here he stated:

“Fundamental rights belong to each person and their main characteristic is universality, which is why they are the basis of equality. Furthermore, it is not possible to have, acquire or sell fundamental rights, as it is when it comes to economic rights ”.

He also stated that fundamental rights require responsibility on the part of the public sphere and government institutions, because they need action laws because they are dissolved without guarantees.

After this, he criticized the political agendas of the governments, as he affirmed that today there are global problems that are not part of their priorities, such as global warming, famine, lack of drinking water, overpopulation, inequality, the nuclear threat, among other things.

"The health crisis caused by Covid-19 can cause an awakening," said the speaker, adding that the pandemic could leave two lessons, the first would be the recognition of the value of good public health, and the second, the awareness of that if people do not change their attitude of depredating all the resources that the earth gives, there will be no world left for anyone else.
