Gabriela Eljuri talked about social cartography

On February 25, the professor from the University of Azuay Gabriela Eljuri was invited by the Group of Public Archeology and Heritage (GAPP) of Barcelona, Spain, to give the talk “Possibilities of social cartography in ethnographic research”.

"The purpose of social cartography is to get closer to an idea of a sketch than a plane, in a sense of how people live and appropriate spaces", the researcher pointed out to the Campus and added:

“The advantage is that it serves for the dialogue of knowledge, since it is a collaborative work. It is a more horizontal collective construction. Another advantage is that it allows social conflicts to become visible, it allows a reflection on the problems of reality ”.

In the talk, Eljuri presented a couple of examples where he put social cartography into practice.

The first was a participatory registry of intangible cultural heritage in Susudel, a parish in the province of Azuay, where different techniques such as conversation, walking, interviewing and observation were applied.

The second example corresponded to the study of the Plaza San Francisco, located in the Historic Center of Cuenca.
