In construction in Ecuador, informality kills

On October 14, the School of Civil Engineering inaugurated the Knowledge and Culture Conference for this semester of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Azuay with a talk on construction of buildings with seismic dissipators and resilient constructions.

Andrés López, Dean of the Faculty, welcomed this new cycle of conferences and stressed that the objective is to continue inviting professionals to promote learning: "The only good that is increased when it is shared is knowledge."

The speaker of this talk, the engineer Edisson Chávez, began his presentation by emphasizing the importance of resilient constructions in Ecuador: “This country is in the worst area in the world, between the Nazca and the South American plate, an area of high seismicity ”.

"If I build informally then I have to expect a lot of fatality, a lot of deaths," added the speaker, since the threat of an earthquake will always be present; However, the degree of vulnerability faced with this risk can be reduced with responsible construction.

Chávez expressed his concern at the lack of awareness that exists about this problem:

“Not even four years have passed since the earthquake in Pedernales and the informality has returned again, there is no such control because the municipalities try to establish regulations, but in the same way the necessary revisions are not made; you swear on a piece of paper that you are doing well and that's it, that goes to a drawer ”.
