Emotional and symbolic ceremony to start the Anthropology degree to celebrate wisdom and diversity at the University of Azuay

On October 5, María Mercedes Quizhpe, Saraguro woman and mother of one of the students of the Anthropology major at the University of Azuay, visited our campus to perform a ceremony and ritual for the beginning of the race, wishing for a good sowing of the first class of students from this school. The emotional ceremony was full of spirituality, wisdom and symbols of the worldview of our ancestral peoples.

"In the Andean world these ceremonies, loaded with symbolism, are of utmost importance because through them we give thanks to everything that surrounds us, putting our intentions and feelings in that important moment," were the words of the anthropology student , Isabel Paqui, who had been designated class president by her classmates and summoned her mother as a guide for this special day.

Killa Raymi Ceremony

The Killa Raymi is one of the four great celebrations of the indigenous peoples of Ecuador in gratitude to Mother Earth, emphasized Mercedes who celebrated that this ceremony took place on the campus of the University of Azuay where she feels so close to the nature and life. This intercultural meeting promoted unity and gratitude in each of the participants: authorities, professors, students, administrative staff and members of the Saraguro community, who shared their intentions in order to symbolically connect with the university family and the young people who begin his way into the world of anthropology.

Our rector, Francisco Salgado, mentioned “may the seed we are sowing today flourish in all our young people and make the world a better place.” Likewise, Genoveva Malo, academic vice-rector, said that “in the seat of our reason and heart let us open ourselves to wisdom and celebrate life and diversity.”

The event concluded with great success, hoping that the sowing from the teachers is with tenderness, care and wisdom so that the harvest of future anthropologists is the best.
