Modernism in Cuenca poetry. An anthology by Jaqueline Verdugo

On September 28 at the University of Azuay, the Presentation of the book “Anthology of modernist Cuenca poetry” by the author Jaqueline Verdugo Cárdenas was held, an event that is framed within the fulfillment of the sustainable development objectives. 

This meeting was led by the University Publishing House and was attended by authorities, professors, administrative staff and students from our university community. 

The author, professor of Secondary Education at the University of Cuenca and Doctor in Spanish Language and Literature, through her publication tells us how her anthology is divided into three moments: premodernism or impressionism, modernism and postmodernism, to reflect the evolution of production. modernist lyric in Cuenca and the region.  

Book Presentation

 

Verdugo comments that the Cuenca modernist movement developed between 1920 and 1940, marking a period of literary renewal in the city. Magazines such as Philelia, Austral and América Latina were vital to disseminate these new currents. Modernist poets faced resistance from local literary traditions, but managed to introduce innovative elements into their poetry, including symbolism, visual aesthetics, and subtle social criticism. Cuenca modernism, although fleeting, left an important mark on the region's literature.

In turn, Genoveva Malo, vice-rector of the University, who addressed a few words to the public, pointed out that “this anthology is a treasure that allows us to relive those moments of splendor, when great poets challenged the literary conventions of their time and gave us verses. impregnated with sensitivity and depth. “His words connect us with the very essence of our city and its creative spirit.”

This edition invites us to be captivated by the voices that resonated in the streets of Cuenca in a time of overflowing creativity.
