Environmental law and the countries of the Andean Community of Nations

From September 13 to 15, the First International Congress of Andean Environmental Law took place at the University of Azuay, organized by the Law School of the UDA and the Court of Justice of the Andean Community.

The purpose of the meeting was to contribute to the implementation of the objectives adopted in the Andean Environmental Charter, from academic reflection and experience in the Andean countries.

In addition, identify community advances in the protection and preservation of the environment and ecosystems, contributing to the mitigation of global environmental problems.

At the inauguration, Rector Francisco Salgado indicated that the theme of the congress is crucial for the contemporary world: "The destiny of humanity is closely linked to environmental law."

Then, Gustavo García Brito, President of the Court of Justice of the Andean Community, took the floor virtually, adding that the two objectives of the event are to place environmental law in the academic field as an object of study and "contribute to the implementation of the Andean Environmental Charter”.

Finally, Jorge Pedraza, Secretary General of the Andean Community, also virtually, highlighted that the Andean Environmental Charter "is one of the milestones of the CAN (Andean Community of Nations) in its 52-year history."

In addition to them, Martha Cobos, Academic Vice-Rector; Jacinto Guillén, Vice-rector for Research; José Chalco Quezada, Dean of the Faculty of Legal Sciences; Sebastián López, Deputy Dean, and Ana María Bustos, Coordinator of the Law School.

Also the members of the Court of Justice of the Andean Community Hugo Gómez, Luis Vergara and Felipe Aguilar.

Throughout the three days, the speakers had 30 minutes for their intervention and at the end they answered the questions received through the virtual platform.

The first speaker was Gustavo García Brito with the presentation "The Evolution of the Andean Environmental Agenda".

Jorge Pedraza also explained, his theme was "The Andean environmental charter: principles, objectives and obligations for the States."

Other topics analyzed during the Congress were Nature as a subject of rights and the experiences of each of the countries in the Andean region with respect to the protection of the environment.
