Product Design and the Creative Economy

On June 30, the University of Azuay together with the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Art and the School of Product Design inaugurated the second edition of the event "Product design in the creative economy between objects and products", which was developed with the presentation of several designers and strategic allies.

To start the program, the Dean of the Faculty, Genoveva Malo, mentioned that this is the opportunity and the space to discuss academically from different dimensions and perspectives on product design, placing as the main objective the incidence of the new creative economy in this area.

The first speaker was Luis Serrano, representative of the Cuenca company AC Medical, which has been in the 3D prosthesis and orthosis manufacturing market for three years, focused on the field of audiology, neurosurgery and traumatology.

In his presentation, Serrano stressed that the method used to make these unique and personalized pieces is by means of a high-tech scanner of the patient's needs, this takes a photograph that is projected to a software, The same that allows the object to be modeled, reconstructed and pre-designed, to then be 3D laser printed and, as a last step, polished and coated with an antibacterial material prior to delivery.

Later, the second speaker was presented with Liz Ordóñez, who is a Cuenca designer in the field of jewelry; His work stands out in the use of silver as a material for his creations, which has allowed him to create unique designs and pieces, which have led him to represent Ecuador and participate in numerous exhibitions and galleries.

Ordóñez stressed that the design of objects allows the designer to "create infinitely", with this premise he presented various pieces ranging from necklaces, tiaras, earrings to handcuffs. He especially highlighted the "Venus Necklace", a work inspired by the Valdivia Culture of Ecuador, which was awarded the UNESCO Recognition of Excellence.

Next, the third speaker, Cristina Urgilés, Master in Design and owner of the workshop “Colibrí. Object Design ”. His work has a history of more than 20 years in the elaboration of enameled ceramic, wood and metal pieces, achieving a diverse production that values artisan processes as an aesthetic form, ethics of expression and cultural manifestations as identity traits.

Urgilés mentioned that "thinking as a designer means projecting, being at the interface of relationships", since according to his creations they start from the idea of being and materializing the subjective. He added that knowing "undressing" an object is nothing more than understanding the subject behind it, since this will be the one who builds his own meaning among the symbols and signs that make up the work.

Finally, José Luis Maldonado was presented, an object designer with more than ten years of experience in design and visualization, a digital artist passionate about design-concept and winner of several national and international awards in the field of jewelry, design of products, character design and real estate design.

Currently, it is developed within the industrial design area at Indurama, this is how he stressed that the development and graphic design of the different products within a company must establish correct communication with their specific functions. Likewise, he highlighted the need to establish a bridge between the design capabilities and capabilities of the company for the manufacture of sustainable products that reflect the values of the brand.

In this way, the first day of meeting of this event was concluded, which aimed to show how Product Design through its acts, actors and artifacts is a participant in the creative economy, as well as in an environment of interaction with the Username.
