World Sustainable Transport Day

World Sustainable Transport Day

November 26 is World Sustainable Transport Day, an important date that invites us to reflect on the need to reduce the environmental impact of mobility and promote systems that contribute to social well-being and sustainability. In a context marked by the climate crisis, this issue is a priority for governments, institutions and citizens.

Mateo Coello, a professor at the University of Azuay, mentions that transport accounts for a quarter of global CO2 emissions generated by human activities. In many countries, the sector consumes more fossil fuels than industry, reaching up to 50% of total consumption. This makes it a significant factor in environmental degradation, which underlines the urgency of implementing sustainable solutions to mitigate these effects.

It is essential to know the main characteristics of a sustainable transport system, says Coello. The system is defined by its low energy demand, which leads to lower CO2 emissions. Although many people associate this concept with walking or using bicycles, the key lies in mass public transport systems, such as buses, subways and trams.

By mobilizing many people simultaneously, these systems more efficiently distribute energy use, significantly reducing environmental impact.

Likewise, academia plays a key role in this transition by generating scientific evidence on the effects of transport on the environment and the benefits of adopting sustainable practices, Coello points out.

In this regard, Coello mentions that the University of Azuay leads these efforts, promoting sustainable mobility among its students and promoting projects such as “A la U en Bici” (To the U by Bike), an initiative that encourages the use of electric bicycles provided by the institution itself for its collaborators, agreements with public institutions, creation of cycle paths and reduction of spaces for vehicles, thus prioritizing pedestrian infrastructure.

The transition to cleaner and more efficient transport is undoubtedly essential to combat climate change, improve quality of life and build a more sustainable future. We can all be part of the change by adopting responsible mobility practices that prioritize collective well-being.
