International Day of Women and Girls in Science

February 11 marks the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a date that highlights the participation and contribution of women and girls in scientific and technological fields, emphasizing the importance of promoting and strengthening their involvement in this field.
In academia, women have made valuable contributions to research in disciplines ranging from the natural sciences to the humanities and social sciences. Their presence and voice in this environment have enriched the debate, ensuring that diverse issues are addressed from multiple perspectives.
In this regard, we highlight the career of Verónica Heras, an architect, active member of the Network of Women Scientists and sub-dean of the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Art, who discovered her love for research during her final year of college. It was through her thesis that she realized the importance of research and the many unanswered questions that still remained to be explored in her field. This experience motivated her to continue researching, which led her to win a scholarship in Belgium, transforming her life and her vision of science.
In turn, Gabriela Duque, professor and researcher at the University of Azuay and currently sub-dean of the Faculty of Administration Sciences of the institution; mentions that she found her vocation for research while carrying out teaching activities. Her interest in providing her students with a comprehensive education and motivating them to research led her to delve deeper into the business world, a discipline that captivated her when she discovered the challenges and difficulties that companies face. It was at that moment that her curiosity became a research engine, driving her to explore and contribute to the field.
Ana Elizabeth Ochoa, a professor and researcher at the University of Azuay, has dedicated her life to the study of sustainable water management in Cuenca, being the coordinator of important research projects related to hydrology and climate change. Since she was little, she showed great curiosity about the world, which led her to constantly ask questions to her mother, who was also a professor. However, it was during her undergraduate thesis that she discovered her true passion for science and research.
A message for future generations…
"We are creating a support network between women and scientists, in which we all have the opportunity to grow, innovate and contribute," she says. For Veronica, science is not only a field of knowledge, but also a space to build community and transform the world.
"Ask a lot of questions, question everything and don't be afraid to find new ways of doing things," advises Gabriela. For her, science is a path that requires perseverance, but it is a path that allows you to make a real difference in life.
"Science gives us the opportunity to serve others," says Ana Elizabeth, encouraging the new generations to find their purpose, discover what they are passionate about and follow their path with dedication. She stresses that research not only offers knowledge, but also allows us to contribute significantly to collective well-being.
Scientific research undoubtedly has the power not only to transform the world, but also to empower new generations of female scientists. Through their work and commitment, these women are paving the way for others to follow in their footsteps, proving that science is an accessible and enriching field for all.
