International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Why? Because historically it has been women who have suffered acts of violence as a way of maintaining Power.

Violence understood as: “The deliberate use of physical force or power, whether threatening or effective, against oneself, another person or a group or community, that causes or has a high probability of causing injury, death, psychological damage, developmental disorders or deprivation. The definition includes both interpersonal violence and suicidal behavior and armed conflicts ”(PAHO, 2002, pp. 4).

Hopefully one day we will stop talking about violence against women and, better yet, that all kinds of violence have been eradicated, in this dream we join the historical efforts to achieve this goal and that we specify below:

1970: An article with the word violence appears in the Journal of Marriage and the Family.

1971: First shelter or shelter for battered women in Europe.

1975: Decade of women promoted by the United Nations (UN).

1979: Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.

1993: Vienna Declaration and Program of Action, in particular the right to be protected from domestic violence.

1994: Organization of American States (OAS) signed the Convention of Belém do Pará for the prevention, punishment and eradication of violence against women.

1995: First feminist meeting of Latin America and the Caribbean. November 25 was named as the International Day of Non-Violence Against Women.

2020: The University of Azuay receives the Accreditation of University Free of Violence against Women, by the German Cooperation GIZ. This represents our commitment to systematic and continuous work to achieve this goal.

Tuesday, November 30: Dialogue table on gender violence online and its treatment in the Organic Penal Code.

Tuesday, November 30: Inauguration of the Exhibition in conjunction with the State Attorney General's Office.

In addition, during the week of November 25, at the La Asunción educational unit, the Citizen Security Council will share violence prevention issues with its students.
