International Education Day
January 24 is International Education Day, an important date that invites us to learn about the fundamental role that education plays in the development of people and communities.
This day, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, seeks to recognize everyone's right to an inclusive, equitable and quality education. The University of Azuay, with its deeply humanistic educational model, places students at the center of its actions and emphasizes the care of professional and human training.
Ximena Vélez, deputy dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Human Sciences at the University of Azuay, mentions that in a constantly changing world, teachers must be prepared to adapt to new realities and resources. Thus, the continuous training of educators is crucial to ensure that students receive a quality education, explained Vélez, emphasizing that pedagogical innovation must go hand in hand with professional development.
Another fundamental issue in the educational field is the use of technology in education, Vélez stressed; digital tools are increasingly prevalent and technology must be seen as an ally of learning.
As technology continues to transform the educational landscape, it is critical that universities implement strategies that prepare students for an increasingly digital and globalized world, without losing sight of the human essence.
In this context, Vélez commented that the University of Azuay promotes internationalization, providing students with the opportunity to interact with other cultures and learn from diverse perspectives.
Innovation, Sustainability and Adaptation: the future of Higher Education
Universities must incorporate an ecological and social vision in the training of their students. Climate change is an urgent reality, and higher education has the duty to prepare future professionals to be responsible both with the environment and with society, said Vélez.
The emotional well-being of students also plays a key role in the educational field; mental health must be a priority, and psychological support programs must be implemented to ensure the well-being of the entire university community.
Regarding the future of higher education, Vélez stressed that innovation and adaptation are essential. The jobs of the future will be very different from those of today, and professionals must be prepared to adapt to these changes. Education must be continuous and flexible to allow our graduates to adjust to rapid technological advances and new job demands, he said.
The International Day of Education invites us to reflect on the fundamental role that education plays in building a more just, sustainable and inclusive future for all. The University of Azuay assumes this commitment by constantly working for an active community that flourishes alongside art, culture and science.
