Conversation with representatives of the EU in Ecuador

On May 26, in the General Auditorium of the University of Azuay, the event "Talk with ambassadors of the European Union in the framework of the Month of Europe" was held, which was attended by diplomatic representatives from France, Italy , Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic and the European Union.

On behalf of the University, Francisco Salgado, Rector, and Marcelo Calle, Director of the Department of International Relations, were present.

The reason for the event was to celebrate the peace and unity achieved by European countries in the context of Europe Month, this year's theme was post-pandemic recovery from an ecological, inclusive and sustainable perspective.

Francisco Salgado was the first to intervene with a welcome speech to those attending the event: “It is very pleasant to receive today representatives of the most important integration process that exists in the world: the European Union. This space is to discuss sustainability, how to face climate change, the use of technologies and other current issues ”.

Later, Pietro Graziani, Co-Director of the Italo-Ecuadorian Fund for Sustainable Development, spoke on behalf of the entire diplomatic corps.

“We are currently seeking to finance environmental projects in three priority areas in Ecuador: conservation of forest heritage, waste management and circular economy; we are convinced that young people do not only represent the future, rather they are the present ”.

Before giving way to the discussion, Marcelo Calle explained the context and the mode of operation of the ambassadors' work tables with the attendees.

“We congratulate the initiative of the European Union to exchange views with our students on a topic as important as the environment. The new generations are very committed to caring for the planet and building a new and better society, ”added Calle.

Later, the attendees went to the discussion with the ambassadors and representatives of the European Union in the Library of the University of Azuay about the so-called "Green Deal" and other ecological issues.

“Having the presence of the Ambassador of the European Union, Charles-Michel Geurts, was very enriching, since his perspective and his contributions focused on the" Green Deal "encourage us to continue educating ourselves as young people, with the aim of creating a better society committed to a necessary change ”, indicated Zully Campos, a student of Production Engineering

Santiago Villavicencio, a Civil Engineering student, agreed with her and concluded that "the experience that this discussion leaves us is very enriching and has helped me to see environmental problems from another perspective."
