Agreement for the ethnographic registry of artisans

Agreement for the ethnographic registry of artisans

On July 16, the University authorities visited the Center for Popular Crafts and Arts (CIDAP) to sign an agreement that aims to carry out an ethnographic registry of artisans in the Historic Center of Cuenca.

The aim of the agreement is to talk about artisans, more than handicrafts, to talk more about subjects than objects.

The Rector of the UDA, Francisco Salgado; the Director of CIDAP, Fausto Ordoñez, and the Dean of the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Art, Genoveva Malo.

The Rector, in his speech, made reference to the recent approval of technological careers in the field of handicrafts that the University will offer and emphasized that the "city is celebrating", due to this achievement achieved by the two institutions that worked together to offer new training opportunities to a sector so important to the cultural life of our region.

In addition, he emphasized the importance of thinking about the people behind handicrafts, through an ethnographic look focused on human beings and their trajectory.

For her part, Genoveva Malo rescued the close link that unites CIDAP and the Faculty of Design since the origins of its curricular offer, the close link of design with culture and the prolific artisan production of the region.

In this sense, he reiterated the commitment that has always existed with the handicrafts sector, with artisans and with the institution that hosts them - CIDAP - not only in this project but in the multiple joint activities carried out by the two institutions.

Fausto Ordoñez thanked the presence of the UDA authorities as well as Gabriela Eljuri, Director of this initiative that seeks to be a fundamental tool for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage embodied in traditional artisan techniques.

The results of the project will contribute, on the one hand, to the generation of a replicable methodology for other territories and as a model for records of other areas of intangible cultural heritage.

On the other hand, the information obtained will be important for the generation of public policies, territorial planning and various safeguard actions, including promotion and dissemination.

The team of researchers will be made up of professors from the University and members of the CIDAP technical team. Among them, Gabriela Eljuri, Mario Brazzero, Natasha Cabrera, Juanita Bersosa, Alfredo Cabrera, Luis Ángel Ávila, as well as technicians from CIDAP and students from the Schools of Design and Architecture.
