“Complete the story: Juliet”, a project of the Postgraduate in Family and Community Medicine

As part of the Postgraduate of Family and Community Medicine of the University of Azuay, together with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education, the first contest "Complete the story: Juliet" will be held, in which the students of eighth, ninth will participate and tenth of education of the cantons of Oña and Nabón.
Pedro Martínez, a family doctor and professor at the University, tells us a little about the aforementioned postgraduate course and the project that will be developed.
Who proposed to incorporate a postgraduate in Family and Community Medicine at the University?
His story begins in the year 2006 when Dr. Edgar Rodas, at that time Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, decides to make a postgraduate degree in which students are trained in the field instead of hospitals.
Then in the year 2012 the Ministry of Health implemented a project at the national level, then Dr. Alberto Quezada mentioned a very important phrase: “Either we get on the train to do the postgraduate course or we stay outside and let others do it”.
That was the first version of this new modality, a three-year program and we are currently in the third version of it.
Why do you decide to do the contest "Complete the story: Juliet" as part of the postgraduate?
The postgraduate course is called Family and Community Medicine, so it implies that you have to have a part of linking with the community. The current project is a project called "Finish the story" because the graduate is based on a proposal based on the narrative, that is, in each classroom we make a story of a family, in which we are ascribing situations and students They are following that narrative.
The idea is that the stories told work better than someone who gives talks about health problems or disease prevention.
Also the idea is that the eighth, ninth and tenth students of the cantons of Oña and Nabón are able to write, because unfortunately we are currently forgetting to write and it is easier to send emojis or that kind of thing.
Why did they decide as a topic for the contest the prevention of teenage pregnancy?
Teen pregnancy in our country is a major health problem and promoting abstention as the only measure to avoid teenage pregnancies does not work.
The intention of that is that women can have an empowerment and the other important part is that men also have empowerment, that they are not violent, that they are not aggressive, that they do not abuse women.
How long does this part of the relationship with the community take within the postgraduate degree?
The postgraduate has synchronous and diachronic axes. The part of the link is a diachronic axis in the sense that it goes along the three years of the postgraduate course. We are always making new projects and programs to connect with the community.
Is the narrative proposal project new?
No, we did it on other occasions, because we also usually do contests so that our students also write stories with the reason that we have forgotten humanism in the sense that a doctor has to have a knowledge of the human part much more than the mere fact of knowing about medicine.
He has to be a scientist, but a humanist scientist.
