Conference series 16A + 1

The April 26 was held in the Auditorium of the University of Azuay a series of conferences with the aim of students of Civil Engineering and Architecture are informed about the geodynamics of the country and know how certain technologies resistant to disasters can be implemented in buildings .

The talks counted on three speakers: the engineer Hugo Yépez; the Minister Counselor of the Embassy of Japan, Ktsumi Itagaki; and the engineer Carlos Antesana Ohashi.

To start the cycle of conferences, the Rector Francisco Salgado, addressed the audience commenting that it was an event of importance for the University as it contributed to the investigation and in turn allowed to commemorate the anniversary of the 16 earthquake in April 2016 on the Ecuadorian coast.

For her part, the teacher and researcher Cecilia Ugalde commented to the public the importance of investigating topics such as these in the professional field and gave a warm welcome to the exhibitors.

The event began with a talk by Hugo Yépez, who spoke about the processes of subduction at the equator, geodynamics and the different characteristics of earthquakes.

Yépez also indicated that the 16 earthquake last April was the last in a series of earthquakes in the contact zone between the oceanic and continental plates.

Subsequently, Ktsumi Itagaki spoke about several similar catastrophes that occurred in Japan over the years and argued that in these cases the road to reconstruction is long and requires a lot of effort and government assistance.

Itagaki said that they have carried out several studies in Ecuador, which have resulted in weak constructions in the country and their structures lack anti-seismic materials.

The last talk was given by Carlos Antesana Ohashi who spoke about the construction of earthquake-resistant buildings and how they could be implemented in Ecuadorian architecture.

"We live in a world that manifests vitality through natural phenomena, and it is an important function of the university to prepare students to act in an ethical and professional manner in the face of these risks", concluded the Rector of the UDA.
