Talk about Lean manufacturing in companies

On April 5, in the framework of its 40 years, the Faculty of Science and Technology and the School of Production Engineering organized a talk called "The challenge of implementing Lean manufacturing in companies", dictated by Alejandro Sureda, an expert in implementation of Lean systems in Latin America.

The event was broadcast on the Zoom digital platform with the aim of introducing students to different management models, so that they can make better decisions in their professional practice.

The organizer of the talk was Professor Damián Encalada, Production and Operations Engineer, who commented that: "Lean manufacturing is not a pill, it is a culture that we must apply to improve and, above all, to be more efficient."

Lean manufacturing concepts, operational stability, standardization, integrated quality, stability, competitive position and the parable of the boiled frog were some of the topics that were developed. Additionally, an analysis was conducted of the companies that led the global industry in the 80s.

Lean manufacturing is a work philosophy that seeks to improve and optimize production systems by eliminating processes that use more resources than necessary, for example, eliminating the waiting time that is too long for a customer to receive your product or service. .

The objective of implementing Lean manufacturing is to generate a new culture of improvement based on communication and teamwork. It is not something that begins and ends, but something that should be treated as a cultural transformation.

"The Lean methodology serves for workers to empower themselves, do things well and to help us be more efficient and effective to meet the requirements of our customers," said Encalada.

The challenge of Lean manufacturing is to change the organizational culture, change the paradigms of the company and apply methodologies and tools that must be used all the time by the company.

In the coming weeks there will be a talk on how to handle last-mile logistics, which is intended to help understand the business production and distribution process.
