Talk about the importance of civic political education

Within the framework of the project "Academic Dialogues on Political Culture", the Faculty of Legal Sciences organized a conversation with Gustavo Vega, Rector of the International University of Ecuador, about the role and responsibility that the Academy has in the political formation of citizens .

The first to speak was the Dean of the Faculty, José Chalco, who highlighted the importance of ethics, justice and freedom "at a critical time for the future of the country due to the presidential elections."

Then it was the turn of the invited speaker, who congratulated the University of Azuay for holding this type of talks to encourage discussion and debate since -in his opinion- democratic culture should be disseminated through the universities.

Dr. Vega then addressed the issue of popular consultations, indicating that they serve to define important situations of the national and international situation.

Among the cases of consultations abroad, the speaker cited referendums and plebiscites held in Canada, Spain, Puerto Rico and Gibraltar.

In Ecuador, Dr. Vega spoke of the consultations related to the environment, such as the one that took place this Sunday in the framework of the presidential election, and the votes that have taken place to revoke mandates of different authorities.

For the speaker, "democracy -through popular consultation- grants political maturity to the states."

Finally, the speaker concluded that the people must be well educated so that there is a healthy democratic process, and for this the role of spaces such as the one organized by the Faculty of Legal Sciences is fundamental.
