Gaps and asymmetries in the forum "Cuenca and its territories"

The Institute of Sectional Regime Studies of Ecuador (IERSE) of the University of Azuay and the Municipality of Cuenca presented on November 18 the forum “Cuenca and its territories” where the asymmetries that exist between the rural and urban sectors were analyzed.

The event had four speakers who analyzed the problem from various perspectives and was moderated by Cecilia Alvarado.

The first intervention was by Gustavo Duche, Cuenca councilor, who highlighted the significant gap that exists in the country's territories: "Rural needs everything, there has not been a definitive development."

Later, Natasha Cabrera, a teacher, rescued three realities of our territory, the natural, urban and rural: "We tend to see rurality as something alien and we need to start seeing the urban and the rural as a whole," he said.

Along the same lines, Pablo Sigüenza, urban architect, reinforced the idea of the territory as a whole stating that: "There is no strict dividing line between urban and rural, the lines are blurred".

Finally, Edwin Diómenes, a professor at the Universidad Santo Tomás de Bogotá, concluded that the problem of inequality that exists between the urban and rural sectors does not only affect Ecuador but also several countries in the region:

"In Latin America conflicts are generated thanks to these territorial differences that are marked by asymmetries and differences where many are vulnerable populations."
