Bioethics and medical malpractices

On May 13, the discussion "What is and what is not medical malpractice" was held as part of the Ethics Program of the University of Azuay, which brought together medical professionals from different areas of knowledge.

The conference was given by Johan Radax, professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad del Azuay and specialist in Bioethics.

The attendees faced real cases that represented a real dilemma for health professionals, facing scenarios in which their patients could be violated or even die due to medical malpractice.

Topics ranging from ethics to legal aspects in which a professional may be involved due to medical malpractice were discussed, all this taking as a reference the articles of the Comprehensive Organic Criminal Code (COIP).

“It is important to point out the two aspects involved in malpractice or medical malpractice; the first is the perspective from bioethics, analyzing the actions of the doctor in his work practice and, on the other hand, the legislative, which converges with the laws of our country ”, said Radax.

Pedro Martínez, also a professor at the Faculty of Medicine, intervened and stressed that “it is evident that we can all be victims of professional malpractice, that is, it is a reality. This can be a psychological burden, many doctors stop practicing due to a situation of fear of a trial ”.

At the end of the event, the importance of Health professionals knowing that when putting their knowledge into practice, legal and ethical factors also intervene, so that, if they go through these types of situations, they should not face them without being prepared.
