Theatrical Art organized the García Lorca Week

The Theater Company of the University of Azuay celebrated a week dedicated to the Spanish writer Federico García Lorca.

On Monday 23 there was a conversation and reading of the work "El Público" in which Carlos Loja and Andrés Zambrano participated.

On Tuesday the play "El Maleficio de la Mariposa" was presented, the first play by García Lorca that was premiered at the 22 of March of 1919, for the students of the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Art.

"When this work was premiered, it was a disaster; They even thought that it was the end of García Lorca's career, despite being his first work, but I think he did not have the success and recognition he deserved because it is a work very advanced to his time "expressed Jefferson Castillo, the manager of the adaptation that was presented in the UDA.

Graduated from the School of Theater Arts of the University of Azuay, Castillo adapted this work for his degree work, which had to have a theme related to death and this work sat him very well, since he connected with it at the time to adapt it.

"At the School of Theater Arts there was a teacher named Fabiola León, who unfortunately died approximately two years before I started with my thesis, she always inspired us to do theater and when she left it was as if my theater partner had left , so this work was done as a kind of tribute to her, "Castillo said.

The work left a series of feelings to its spectators, who during the entire show laughed, were moved, saddened and aroused some other emotion, which perhaps was very deep in their being.

On Wednesday 25 in April, the play "Amor de Don Perlimplín con Belisa en su jardín" was presented at La Guarida.

In this staging was attended by the students of the School of Theater Arts of the UDA, the direction and adaptation of Andrés Zambrano, who worked as director of the Spanish repertoire in the United States.

Andrés Zambrano was born in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador, but at the age of eight he moved to New York City, where he spent much of his childhood and adolescence reading books.  

Andrés received a scholarship to study theater and during his career he has staged many works by García Lorca.

"Andrés is obsessed with Lorca, he analyzes every point and every comma that the scripts have and goes much further. Doing this work for Andrés was like a caramelito, because all the stories he usually puts on the scene are more tragic and much more dramatic, "said Jefferson Castillo.

"Thank you for filling the house, for being that spirit that completes us. I hope and it is not the last tragedy. I hope and love will continue, "said Andrés Zambrano, director of the staging, on their social networks.

Concluding the Week dedicated to Garcia Lorca, on Thursday 26 in April the premiere of the play "So pass 5 years, the legend of time" in the Auditorium of the University of Azuay was held.

The Rector of the UDA, Dr. Francisco Salgado Arteaga, welcomed all those attending the event.

“We are living the festival of painting, art, the human being; We can only face the life that comes to us with art, with the possibility of growing as human beings, with the convergence of the best that has the sensitivity of aesthetics to transport us to unimagined worlds, which make us more and more beings humans ”, expressed the Rector.

So spend five years, the legend of time, is a work that has a non-conventional dramatic approach, its structure resembles that of a dream where time elapses synchronously, with parallels, jumps and returns.

"Garcia Lorca was chosen because he is a brutal actor, in the good sense of the word, he has no qualms about approaching poetry, music, painting and theater; He is a complete artist. He was one of those few people who made his life a work of art, in a few words he was a good guy, "said Jaime Garrido, Director of the staging and Coordinator of the School of Theater Arts.

The musicality, by Carlos Loja, with performances by Michelle Astudillo and Damián Albornoz, as well as the set and lighting, were fundamental in the adaptation that the Theater Company made for the enjoyment of the work.
