Balanced feed and animal protein production

On November 27, the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Azuay and the School of Food Engineering presented the talk “Manufacture of balanced foods as a key factor in the value chain of animal protein production”, with the support of EDEC EP (Municipal Public Economic Development Company).

María Fernanda Rosales, Coordinator of the School, referred to the

start of the event to animal nutrition as an area of great importance in the food industry.

Then it was the turn of the exhibitor, the Colombian Freddy Prada Medina, veterinarian and zootechnician specialized in swine production and health, who mentioned that there has been a noticeable increase in the production of balanced food as the population grows.

The speaker stressed that the primary stage for the production of balanced must have specific conditions and characteristics to meet the physiological needs of the animals, in order to increase their production.

In poultry and swine farms, which are the ones that have grown the most in recent years, the production of concentrate has raw materials such as: corn, sorghum, rice (to a low extent), soy, roots and tubers, these are ingredients essential and basic for a correct balance.

Likewise, he explained the two different processes to produce balanced feed for animals, the first is to produce balanced feed, with a presentation similar to powder or flour, which consists of a shorter process; and the second, which is the most common, which consists of pelletizing the concentrate, which is presented in cubes or rounded.

Finally, Dr. Freddy Prada delved into the entire process involved, explaining from the manufacture of the balance, to the final result, the meat, which would be the product obtained from the animal, it is here, where we can really check and assess the quality of the balanced feed produced.
