In 2015, the world united in the commitment to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: Clean water and sanitation, as part of the 2030 Agenda, which seeks to ensure access for all to well-managed drinking water and sanitation. safely by the year 2030. In this context, the School of Environmental Engineering of the University of Azuay, in collaboration with various public entities in the city, organized an outstanding agenda to commemorate World Water Day.

The event spanned three days and offered a variety of activities aimed at raising awareness in the community about the importance of water and the challenges it faces today.

First day: Connection with the water source

On the first day of the event, primary and secondary school students had the opportunity to participate in an educational tour of the city's Botanical Garden. During the visit, the young people were able to learn where the water they use in their daily lives comes from, as well as raise awareness about the need for responsible use of the resource and the risks of climate change.

Second day: Academic focus

The second day focused on the academic aspect with keynote talks that took place in the auditorium of the University of Azuay. Experts in the fields of: Control of water quality and quantity in Cuenca, Construction of cities more resilient to floods, and Flow regulation and its importance in risk prevention shared their knowledge and experiences with the attending public.

Third day: "We Move Through Water" Race

The event culminated on an energetic note with the “We Move Through Water” athletic race. The participants traveled 6 kilometers, symbolizing the distance that many people must travel daily to access the vital water resource. The race was a resounding success, with great participation from the Cuenca community and a strong demonstration of support for the cause of sustainable water.

This World Water Day commemorative event underlines the importance of continuing to work together to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals related to the most important natural resource of all, and ensure a safer future for all.
