7 weather stations created at the UDA head to Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos

Within the research group of the University of Azuay, a project financed by the German Cooperation is being carried out, in collaboration with the University of Marburg, the Technical University of Berlin, the University of Cuenca, the Charles Darwin Foundation, the Park Galapagos National and our institution.

The purpose of the research network is to promote collaboration and cooperation between different institutions in order to promote joint projects of an academic, research, cultural and scientific nature. These projects are intended to strengthen the institutions involved and contribute to the comprehensive development of the province of Galapagos.

This initiative focuses on the study of water resources in the context of climate change, with the purpose of monitoring the spatio-temporal dynamics of precipitation on Santa Cruz Island. To achieve this, seven meteorological stations will be installed in the productive area of said island, distributed along the altitudinal gradient.

The design, development and implementation of these weather stations has been carried out within our university community. The main objective has been to create a low-cost and easily scalable product that allows the densification of the remote sensor network in the Galapagos Islands.

This project is intended to promote research and technology through field work in areas that require support, thus contributing to the sustainable development of the region.
