The Publishing House of the UDA presents a book on the pandemic

On February 11, the Publishing House of the Universidad del Azuay presented the book "Medical-surgical approach during the COVID-19 pandemic", a series of articles on the pandemic that we are currently experiencing, compiled by doctors Juan Carlos Salamea, Miguel Ángel Moyón and David Esteban Barzallo.

“This is the type of relevant research and publication that Ecuador needs. Convinced of this, in a short time, distinguished professors and distinguished doctors and surgeons have come together to write and compile more than 50 chapters that make up this book, a valuable and reliable work for those who search for updated knowledge to put it at the service of society. and of life ”, said the Rector of the UDA, Francisco Salgado, in the presentation.

We interviewed Dr. Juan Carlos Salamea about the work and about the current situation caused by Covid-19.

The pandemic produced by this new virus called COVID-19 has turned out to be a challenge for health systems and medical personnel; Being a disease caused by a new virus of which we know little, this turns out to be a real problem for diagnosis and treatment, causing a lot of uncertainty.

As the days go by, a series of articles begins to be generated in order to fill this knowledge gap regarding COVID-19, with an overwhelming scientific production: many of the articles are versions before peer reviews, others are published from from laboratory experiments or clinical trials with non-significant samples.

How does this work begin to take shape?

Several doctors, when we meet in different hospitals facing this new disease, begin to generate management protocols, which are modified day by day based on experience or the appearance of new information.

In this way informal conversations begin between doctors from different hospitals that are facing this pandemic at the hospital level, exchanging information and experiences and, finally, protocols are exchanged.

This exchange of management guides occurs between José Carrasco Arteaga Hospitals - IESS Cuenca, Hospital San Francisco - IESS Quito and Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso - MSP Cuenca, and thus the idea of combining experiences and having protocols / guides for hospitals is born from the country.

How is the UDA involved in this exchange of experiences?

This idea is socialized with the Rector of the Universidad del Azuay and received in the best way, in addition to all the support to have a work.

The project is opened to several doctors, specialists, professors, experts from various hospitals in the country and these manuscripts of experiences from each hospital are received.

Through a group of professionals who we compiled (Miguel Moyón from Quito, David Barzallo and Juan Carlos Salamea from Cuenca) the information is selected, documents are combined and so, in record time, thanks to the collaboration of the professionals of the country, from the University of Azuay and its Publishing House, we can present this work to the country.

A 54-chapter book that tries to answer the concerns of doctors, put on paper the best local experiences that are working to face the pandemic.
