International Day of Women and Girls in Science

International Day of Women and Girls in Science

On February 11, at the Hernán Malo Library, the event `` Sharing between researchers of the UDA '' was organized within the framework of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

The objective of this workshop was to promote education and public awareness in order to achieve greater participation and progress of women and girls in science, recognizing that science and gender equality are vital to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (ODS).

Thanks to the meeting of researchers, an exchange space between teachers and students could be articulated to know the lines of action in the different faculties of the University and reflect on gender and sustainability.

The program was divided into three axes: who we are, gender and research, and sustainability. They were analyzed in interdisciplinary groups among the participants.

Throughout the training, the participants studied the current problems and the professors and researchers Johanna Ochoa, Daniela Ballari, Carla Hermida and Caroline Ávila concluded that gender debate should be implemented in university policies.

In addition, those present noted that, in the early 1980s, women had no place in the academic world. Over the years this has changed; However, there are very few indigenous and Afro-Ecuadorian women dedicated to research and teaching in the country's institutions.

The event ended with the words of Martha Cobos, Academic Vice Chancellor, who said that `` the human being is in charge of changing the macho culture. We must be a University of peace, open to dialogue and capable of continuing to discuss these vital issues. ''
